USB PD 3.0 vs. 3.1: What Matters When Buying a Power Bank
By Robert PetersonUSB Power Delivery makes one USB-C charging setup useful across compatible phones, tablets and laptops. PD 3.0 and PD 3.1 describe versions of that standard; the product’s port rating tells you its available output. Techsmarter’s 65W and 100W laptop power banks turn those specifications into practical choices for everyday work and travel.
What changed with USB PD 3.1?
The USB-IF explains that the PD 3.1 update enabled up to 240W over compatible USB-C equipment, expanding beyond the earlier 100W ceiling. Reaching those higher levels requires equipment and cables designed for the relevant power range.
This is a capability of the standard. It does not make every product advertised with a newer PD version a 240W charger, and it does not increase the output of a 65W or 100W bank beyond its specifications.
Read the specifications in a useful order
- Find the power and charging connection recommended for your device.
- Check the chosen port’s supported voltage/current profiles and maximum output.
- Check whether that output changes when additional devices connect.
- Confirm cable capability.
- Then use the protocol version and supported modes to resolve compatibility questions.
This order keeps the buying decision centered on your device rather than on whichever version number sounds newest.
What a 100W bank does—and does not—tell you
The TSBar 20,000mAh 100W offers up to 100W USB-C charging for compatible devices. Evaluate it as a 100W product. Do not reinterpret that output as 140W or 240W because those numbers appear in descriptions of newer USB standards.
Likewise, an output figure is not a battery-capacity figure. Compare the bank’s stored-energy reserve separately from the rate at which it can supply power. A laptop that requires more available power may need a different charging solution for its intended workload.
PPS is a separate question to check
PPS supplies adjustable power for supported phone fast-charging modes. Techsmarter PPS power banks offer one-hour fast charging for compatible phones with the supported cable and port, alongside USB-C PD for other compatible devices.
Our PD and PPS guide explains compatible-phone fast charging and helps you choose a versatile Techsmarter setup.
Buy for the setup you can use
If your current device is well served by a supported 65W or 100W setup, the existence of a higher standard ceiling does not by itself create a reason to replace everything. A future device purchase may change your needs, but assess its specifications when you have a model in mind.
Compare 65W and 100W options and select the bank, adapter and cable as a working combination.
Separate a standard’s ceiling from a product’s rating
| Term | What to compare |
|---|---|
| USB PD 3.0 | The supported power profiles of the exact equipment |
| USB PD 3.1 | The standard includes extended power capabilities up to 240W; the product may support less. |
| 65W or 100W portable charger | The maximum output of its specified port |
| PPS battery pack | The actual PPS range and device requirements |
This is why choosing a battery pack by a protocol version alone is incomplete. A 100W port remains a 100W port even though a standard permits higher-power implementations.
Frequently asked questions
Does PD 3.1 always mean 240W?
No. It enables higher power within the standard; each product still has its own supported limits.
Does USB-C always mean laptop charging?
No. Check the device and port’s supported charging functions.
Is maximum output the same as recharge input?
No. Read the power bank’s input specification separately.
Choose charging power with everyday versatility
A TSBar PPS power bank combines USB-C laptop capability with one-hour fast charging for compatible phones using the supported setup. Choose 65W or 100W around your laptop and pick your capacity around time between outlets. That keeps the focus on features you will put to work.
